It is a peaceful scene in the backyard as a beautiful hummingbird eats from a bird feeder. Many hummingbirds have a fantastic array of colors they display on their feathers.
The one currently enjoying a meal has a gorgeous purple face that shines brilliantly under the sunlight. It isn’t so clear when he lowers his head to eat.
Hummingbirds are the only species that can fly backward. They do not migrate in flocks like other birds. Instead, they travel alone for up to 500 miles at a time.
The hummingbird flaps his wings quickly like a helicopter to keep himself above the feeder. He repeatedly feasts on it. When he lifts his head, he looks curiously at his surroundings.
It is vital that these feeders are bright and colorful. Hummingbirds do not have a good sense of smell, but they are equipped with keen color vision. Birds such as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird tend to feed on orange and red flowers.
In North and South America, there are over 330 species of hummingbirds. People need to be careful not to use dye in the nectar since it could harm the birds.
If people want to help hummingbirds, they should instead plant naturally bright flowers or have feeders with clear vibrant colors.
